Haigh Woodland Park

Sightseeing attraction | Wigan | England | United Kingdom

Family-friendly activities in the park

Haigh Woodland Park in Wigan, England, is one of the region's most outstanding attractions and a true highlight for nature lovers, families, and history enthusiasts. This expansive park, spanning approximately 100 hectares, is set in a picturesque environment and combines natural beauty with a variety of recreational opportunities and a touch of history. It is considered one of the most popular green spaces in Wigan and is continuously being developed to offer visitors an unforgettable experience.

Hiking in Haigh Woodland Park

The park is closely connected to Haigh Hall, a grand manor house built in the 19th century. The estate was once the residence of the Lindsay family, specifically the 7th Earl of Balcarres, and reflects the wealth and influence of this family, who amassed riches through coal mining during the Industrial Revolution. Although the manor house is mainly used for events today and is currently being restored to transform into a luxury hotel, it remains a prominent landmark visible from the surrounding parklands. The view from the hill on which the building sits stretches over the Douglas Valley, offering impressive vistas of the landscape all the way to the Welsh hills on clear days.

Historical attractions in Wigan

The design of Haigh Woodland Park is inspired by the classic English landscape style popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Characterized by expansive meadows, winding paths, and a harmonious arrangement of trees, it creates a peaceful atmosphere. Particularly impressive are the extensive woodland areas with old tree specimens, including beech, oak, and chestnut trees. These forests harbor a diverse range of flora and fauna, including various bird species such as woodpeckers and an abundance of wildflowers that bloom in spring and summer. For nature lovers, the park offers numerous trails leading through dense greenery, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings at their own pace.

Exploring nature reserves in Wigan

In addition to its natural beauty, Haigh Woodland Park is also a paradise for families and active enthusiasts. The park features a large adventure playground that delights children of all ages with climbing frames, swings, and even small zip lines for fun. Another attraction is the high ropes course, suitable for both beginners and the daring, promising an adrenaline rush at lofty heights. For golf enthusiasts, there is an adventure mini-golf course with creative obstacles, as well as more traditional golf options, making the park a versatile destination. A miniature railway runs through the woods and gardens and is particularly popular with younger visitors, while the surrounding paths are perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling.

Recreational options for kids in the park

Another highlight is the so-called Kitchen Courtyard, an area housed in the former stables of the estate. Here, visitors can find a selection of culinary offerings, including cafes, a bakery, and small shops offering regional specialties. This area invites visitors to linger and provides a welcome opportunity to refresh after a stroll. Additionally, there are well-maintained gardens, such as the walled rose garden, which with its peaceful atmosphere and fragrant flowers is an ideal spot for a break.

Haigh Woodland Park stands out from other attractions in the region due to its combination of nature, recreational activities, and historical heritage. While Wigan itself is more known for its industrial past, the park offers a green oasis promising relaxation and adventure alike. It is an example of how historical sites can be transformed into modern leisure destinations without losing their original charm. Regular events also take place here, such as craft markets or outdoor activities, enriching the experience further.

It has some for everyone. Went on a busy day facilities were kept clean. Lovely walks, multiple play areas and woods. Clean picnic areas. Dogs welcome and opportunities for off lead. Only downside was parking, in particular gaining entry to car park. Far too slow, would like to see automated ticket entry . It would be quicker and reduce traffic hold up, on approaching lane. It did take too long

Haigh Hall and the surrounding plantations, AKA Haigh Woodland Park are a great place for a bit of R&R. The main path through the plantations is wide and and is surfaced with tarmac making it accessible for all. It's both dog and cycle friendly with several entrances that include access from Swinley, Whelley and Haigh. As of March 2025 the main hall, a listed stately home, is currently undergoing restoration however there are many other facilities in the immediate vicinity. These include a sprawling playground for the kids, high rope adventure, mini golf, a great little bar and numerous cafes and shops. There is also a large carpark close to the facilities for those who wish to arrive by car.

Nice woodland area, excellent quality playground, the former stables contains a number of coffee shops, restaurants. As well as high ropes, minature railway and mini golf, there's a food walk to the plantation gates and the cafe opposite is quite nice. There's not much in the way of facilities once you cross the canal, the paths are tarmac and wide but steep and can flood in places

Always a great daybout. Kids love it, can get crowded at peak times but that's because it's a great outdoor place. Would have been a 5* review but for the price of the cafe, £5 for a bowl of chips! The prices in the cafe are the only let down.

In the past few years this park has had a bit of needed TLC, it has always been a lovely place for a quiet stroll and that hasn't changed. It could still do with more being done but nonetheless, a lovely place, a couple of nice cafes for lunch, just the place to relax and unwind
